Franklin is a waterfall lover’s dream. Throughout our region, you’ll find cascading falls hidden in lush forests, along scenic highways, and deep in the mountains. Whether you’re looking for easy accessible roadside views or rewarding hikes to hidden gems, here are some of our favorite scenic waterfall trails near Franklin.

🌊 1. Dry Falls (Must-See Walk-Behind Waterfall!)

  • Height: 75 feet
  • Distance: Short walk from the parking lot (less than 0.1 miles)
  • Why Visit? One of the most photographed waterfalls in North Carolina, Dry Falls allows you to walk behind the rushing water without getting wet! It’s an easy, family-friendly stop just off U.S. 64 (Waterfall Byway).
Cullasaja Falls

🏞 2. Cullasaja Falls (Stunning Roadside Cascade)

  • Height: 250 feet
  • Distance: Roadside view (no official trail)
  • Why Visit? This jaw-dropping cascade is part of the Cullasaja River and can be seen from U.S. 64. The falls tumble dramatically down the rock face, making for a fantastic photo stop. Be cautious when pulling off the road because parking is limited.

💦 3. Glen Falls (Three-Tiered Waterfall with a Scenic Hike!)

  • Height: 60 feet per tier (180 feet total)
  • Distance: 2.4 miles round trip (moderate hike)
  • Why Visit? Just a short scenic drive from Franklin, this multi-tiered waterfall in Highlands offers three unique viewpoints along a forested trail. Each level has a gorgeous, cascading flow, making the hike worth every step. A perfect stop for those who enjoy hiking and photography!
Rufus Morgan Falls

🌲 4. Rufus Morgan Falls (Secluded & Peaceful!)*

  • Height: 60 feet
  • Distance: 1-mile loop (moderate hike)
  • Why Visit? A hidden gem near Franklin, this trail takes you through lush mountain forest before reaching a stunning, free-falling waterfall. It’s a great off-the-beaten-path choice if you want a peaceful, uncrowded experience.

🌄 5. Bridal Veil Falls (Drive up to a Waterfall!)

  • Height: 45 feet
  • Distance: Roadside
  • Why Visit? One of the few waterfalls you can drive right up to, Bridal Veil Falls is a quick but unique stop along the Waterfall Byway. If you’re visiting after heavy rainfall, the water flow is even more spectacular!

⛰ 6. Big Laurel Falls (Short, Easy Hike to a Beautiful Falls!)

  • Height: 30 feet
  • Distance: 1.2 miles round trip (easy hike)
  • Why Visit? A gentle walk along a scenic creek leads to this peaceful waterfall in the Nantahala National Forest. A short drive west of Franklin, it’s great for families, dogs, and casual hikers looking for a relaxing nature escape.

🚶‍♂️ 7. Secret Falls (A True Hidden Gem!)

  • Height: 50 feet
  • Distance: 1.4 miles round trip (moderate hike)
  • Why Visit? True to its name, Secret Falls is a secluded paradise deep in the forest. The trail leads to a beautiful waterfall with a natural pool, making it perfect for wading or just soaking in the serene atmosphere.

🌊 8. Lower Whitewater Falls (One of the Tallest in the East!)

  • Height: 200 feet
  • Distance: 4 miles round trip (moderate to strenuous hike)
  • Why Visit? Part of the mighty Whitewater Falls system, this section features impressive cascades and a dramatic drop. Located to the east of Highlands, the trail takes you through rugged wilderness and rewards you with an epic waterfall view.
