Memorable Hiking Trails Near Franklin

We’re not going to be shy about this…Franklin is a hiker’s paradise. With its stunning mountain trails, cool shaded forests, streams, rivers and numerous waterfalls, scenic should be our middle name. Whether you’re looking for a challenging trek or a leisurely stroll through the woods, all with incredible views, there are plenty of trails for you to enjoy the fresh mountain air and a memorable adventure.

🥾 Wayah Bald and the Appalachian Trail

  • Distance: Varies (short walk from the parking lot to an extended hike)
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
  • Highlights: Stunning panoramic views from Wayah Bald Fire Tower, access to the Appalachian Trail, and cool mountain breezes.
  • Note: Parking is located yards away from the fire tower and is wheelchair accessible.

🌲 Bartram Trail to William’s Pulpit

  • Distance: 4 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Highlights: A peaceful forest hike along the Bartram Trail with a gorgeous overlook of the Nantahala Mountains.

💦 Cullasaja Falls Trail (Short Walk)

  • Distance: Less than 1 mile
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Highlights: A stunning 250-foot waterfall that cascades down the mountainside along the scenic Waterfall Byway (U.S. 64).
  • Note: the parking lot leads to wheelchair-accessible viewing spots

🏞 Pickens Nose Trail (Fun & Unique Name!)

  • Distance: 1.5 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Highlights: Jaw-dropping rock outcroppings with amazing views into North Carolina and Georgia.
  • Note: the road to the trail officially opens April 1.

🏕 Standing Indian Mountain Loop (Challenging Adventure!)

  • Distance: 10 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Strenuous
  • Highlights: Sweeping 360-degree mountain views, lush rhododendron tunnels, and a taste of the Appalachian Trail.
